Hersh Goldberg-Polins Parents Plead For Hostage Release After 200 Days...

The parents of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, a 23-year-old American-Israeli held hostage by Hamas since October 7, made an emotional plea for his release Tuesday as the ordeal reached its 200th day. The case has drawn renewed attention this week after a recent video released by Hamas showed Goldberg-Polin alive but missing part of his arm from the initial attack.

Rachel and Jon Goldberg-Polin spoke at a press conference in Jerusalem, urging world leaders to intensify efforts to secure their son’s freedom. "Every minute feels like an eternity," Rachel Goldberg-Polin told reporters, holding up a handwritten sign with the number 200 to mark the days since her son was taken from the Nova music festival.

The video, circulated by Hamas on April 24, represents the first proof of life since Goldberg-Polin was captured during the militant group’s surprise attack on southern Israel. The footage shows the California-born hostage speaking directly to the camera, though experts warn it may have been recorded under duress.

Goldberg-Polin’s case has become a focal point in hostage negotiations between Israel and Hamas. U.S. officials confirmed this week that CIA Director William Burns is involved in renewed mediation efforts through Qatari intermediaries. Secretary of State Antony Blinken mentioned Goldberg-Polin by name during recent congressional testimony.

Public interest surged in the U.S. after Goldberg-Polin’s parents appeared on major networks, including CNN and NBC, this week. A White House petition demanding action has gathered over 150,000 signatures since Monday. Jewish organizations across America have organized vigils from New York to Los Angeles.

The American Jewish Committee called the 200-day milestone "a stain on humanity" in a statement Wednesday. Meanwhile, protesters outside the United Nations headquarters in New York displayed enlarged photos of Goldberg-Polin and other hostages during a rally Tuesday afternoon.

Medical experts expressed concern about Goldberg-Polin’s visible injury in the Hamas video. Dr. Adam Goldstein, a trauma surgeon at Johns Hopkins, told the Washington Post that untreated amputations in captivity carry high risks of infection and complications.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu referenced Goldberg-Polin during his Holocaust Remembrance Day speech Tuesday, vowing to "bring all our hostages home." The Israeli military estimates 133 captives remain in Gaza, with at least 34 presumed dead.

Goldberg-Polin’s parents continue maintaining a social media campaign with the hashtag #BringHershHome, which has trended on X (formerly Twitter) for three consecutive days. Their next planned action includes meeting with UN ambassadors in New York next week.

As Passover begins next Monday, Jewish communities worldwide plan to leave an empty chair at seder tables to symbolize the missing hostages. The Goldberg-Polin family says they will observe the tradition while awaiting what they call "a modern-day miracle."
