NASA Announces Artemis II Crew, Final Step Before Moon Return...

NASA revealed the four astronauts who will fly aboard Artemis II, the first crewed mission to orbit the Moon in over 50 years. The announcement, made live from Houston on April 11, 2026, marks a critical milestone in America's plan to return humans to the lunar surface by late 2027.

The crew includes NASA astronauts Christina Koch, Victor Glover, and Reid Wiseman, along with Canadian Space Agency astronaut Jeremy Hansen. Koch, who holds the record for longest continuous spaceflight by a woman, will serve as mission specialist. Glover, the first Black astronaut assigned to a lunar mission, will pilot the Orion spacecraft.

Artemis II is scheduled to launch in late 2026, following the successful uncrewed Artemis I test flight in 2022. The 10-day mission will test life support systems and spacecraft performance ahead of the planned Artemis III Moon landing. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson called it "the last proving ground before we send boots back to the lunar surface."

The announcement has sparked renewed public interest in space exploration, with #ArtemisII trending on social media platforms. The mission represents the first time since 1972 that humans will travel beyond low-Earth orbit, putting the U.S. back on track for sustained lunar exploration.

Congressional leaders from both parties praised the crew selection, while aerospace analysts note the mission's importance for testing technologies needed for future Mars missions. The Orion spacecraft, built by Lockheed Martin, will carry the crew around the Moon without landing before returning to Earth.

NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston will oversee mission operations, with support from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida where the Space Launch System rocket will lift off. The agency plans to livestream extensive crew training over the coming months as preparations intensify for the historic flight.
