NFL Draft Kicks Off Tonight With High-Stakes First Round...

The 2026 NFL Draft begins tonight in Detroit, drawing millions of football fans as teams make franchise-altering decisions. This year’s draft is trending nationwide as analysts debate whether quarterbacks will dominate the top picks or if defensive stars will shake up the board.

ESPN and NFL Network will broadcast the event live from downtown Detroit’s Campus Martius Park starting at 8 PM ET. The Chicago Bears hold the No. 1 pick for the second straight year, with Stanford quarterback Elijah Thompson widely projected as their choice.

Draft excitement intensified this week after the New York Jets traded up to secure the No. 3 selection. Team owner Woody Johnson told reporters Wednesday they’re targeting “a game-changer” to pair with quarterback Aaron Rodgers.

Over 300,000 fans are expected in Detroit for the three-day event, which continues with rounds 2-3 on Friday and 4-7 on Saturday. Local businesses anticipate record revenues, with hotels sold out across the metro area.

This draft class features unprecedented depth at offensive tackle and cornerback, according to NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah. At least five teams have explored trading back to accumulate more picks in those position groups.

The draft’s timing coincides with heightened interest in team rebuilding strategies after several surprise playoff runs last season. Analysts say the Las Vegas Raiders and Denver Broncos could make aggressive moves to jumpstart their rosters.

FanDuel Sportsbook reports heavy betting action on draft props, including “number of QBs taken in first round” (over/under 4.5) and “first defensive player selected” (Michigan edge rusher David Carter is the -120 favorite).

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell will announce first-round picks in person after last year’s virtual format due to labor negotiations. The league expects this to be the most-watched draft since 2020, when pandemic lockdowns drove record viewership.
