Sonic Boom Rattles East Coast, Sparking Widespread Reports...

A loud sonic boom startled residents across the eastern United States on Saturday morning, triggering thousands of social media reports and emergency calls. The U.S. military later confirmed an authorized Air Force training exercise caused the noise, which was heard from Virginia to New York shortly after 9:30 a.m. EDT.

Witnesses described the sound as "an explosion" or "earthquake-like rumble," with many reporting shaking windows and rattled nerves. The Federal Aviation Administration received over 1,200 inquiries about the incident within an hour, temporarily overwhelming some regional 911 centers.

NORAD officials stated the boom originated from an F-16 fighter jet conducting supersonic training off the Atlantic coast. "This was a planned operation with all proper clearances," said Maj. Bethany Smith at Langley Air Force Base. Military exercises in the region have increased recently amid heightened tensions overseas.

The event trended nationally as confused residents shared security camera footage and doorbell recordings of the disturbance. Meteorologists quickly ruled out natural causes, while local authorities reassured the public no damage or injuries were reported. Similar incidents occurred in 2023 when Navy jets broke the sound barrier during East Coast drills.

Aviation experts note sonic booms rarely cause structural damage but often trigger public alarm when unexpected. The FAA advises anyone who experiences a sudden loud noise to check official sources before calling emergency services. Saturday's event marks the third confirmed sonic boom over the U.S. this year.
