Tornado Touches Down In Fresno, Causing Widespread Damage...

A rare tornado struck Fresno, California, early Friday morning, leaving a trail of destruction across the city. The National Weather Service confirmed the EF-1 tornado touched down near downtown around 6:15 a.m., with winds reaching 110 mph. At least 12 structures were severely damaged, including homes and businesses, though no fatalities have been reported.

The tornado uprooted trees, downed power lines, and shattered windows in its path. Emergency crews are still assessing the damage, with reports of minor injuries from flying debris. Fresno County officials have declared a local state of emergency to expedite cleanup and recovery efforts.

Residents shared harrowing videos on social media showing the funnel cloud moving through residential neighborhoods. The storm system also brought heavy rain and hail, complicating rescue operations. Pacific Gas & Electric reported over 8,000 customers lost power, with crews working to restore service.

This marks the first confirmed tornado in Fresno County since 2018. Meteorologists attribute the unusual weather to a strong low-pressure system moving through Central California. The National Weather Service has issued flood watches for the region through Saturday.

Local schools canceled classes, and several highways remain closed due to debris. The Red Cross has opened two shelters for displaced residents. Governor Gavin Newsom said state resources are being mobilized to assist with recovery efforts.

The tornado is trending nationally as Californians grapple with increasingly extreme weather patterns. Climate scientists note that while tornadoes remain rare on the West Coast, their frequency has increased slightly in recent years. Fresno officials urge residents to avoid damaged areas and report hazards to 911.
