Uber Expands Self-Driving Fleet Amid Growing Public Skepticism...

Uber announced today it is doubling its self-driving vehicle fleet in Phoenix, Austin, and Miami, marking its largest autonomous expansion since a fatal 2018 crash. The move comes as new NHTSA data shows rising public distrust of driverless technology, with 58% of Americans expressing discomfort sharing roads with autonomous vehicles.

The ride-hailing company will deploy 500 additional modified Volvo XC90 SUVs equipped with its latest "Autonomy 4.0" system. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi emphasized the technology's improved safety record during a press conference at the company's Pittsburgh R&D center earlier today. "We've logged 5 million accident-free miles since 2022," he stated.

Public reaction has been mixed. Safety advocates point to Uber's 2021 settlement with the family of Elaine Herzberg, who was killed by a self-driving Uber in Tempe, Arizona. Meanwhile, urban planners welcome the expansion as a potential solution to traffic congestion. Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego called the move "an inevitable step toward smarter cities."

The expansion coincides with new federal regulations requiring autonomous vehicles to meet stricter cybersecurity standards. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg acknowledged the public's concerns during a Senate hearing yesterday, pledging "unprecedented oversight" of the rapidly evolving technology.

Uber's stock rose 3% following the announcement, though analysts note the company still faces hurdles. Recent AAA surveys show Gen Z riders are 27% more likely to reject autonomous rides than older demographics. The company plans to address this through a new public education campaign launching next month.

Phoenix residents will see the first new vehicles hit the streets next Tuesday, with Austin and Miami deployments following in June. Uber confirmed human safety drivers will remain in all vehicles during this phase, despite the system's fully autonomous capabilities.
