Industry experts warn the declines could accelerate as networks face contract renewals with local affiliates. Several major market stations have already reduced traditional news programming in favor of syndicated content. The ratings slump comes amid broader challenges for linear TV, including declining ad revenue and production cost inflation.

Public reaction has been mixed, with some viewers lamenting the loss of traditional journalism while others embrace digital alternatives. Networks have responded by expanding streaming offerings, though none have yet matched the reach of their legacy broadcasts. The latest numbers suggest the transformation of news consumption is accelerating faster than many predicted.
