Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Announces Independent Presidential Bid...

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. officially launched his independent presidential campaign on Sunday, shaking up the 2024 race just months before Election Day. The environmental lawyer and anti-vaccine activist filed paperwork with the Federal Election Commission, confirming his long-anticipated third-party run.

Kennedy’s announcement comes as polls show deep dissatisfaction with both major-party candidates. A recent Harvard CAPS-Harris survey found 58% of voters want alternatives to President Biden and former President Trump. Kennedy’s team believes he can capitalize on this discontent.

The 70-year-old scion of America’s most famous political family had previously sought the Democratic nomination before switching to an independent bid. His campaign focuses on anti-establishment themes, including opposition to “corporate capture” of government and skepticism of mainstream public health policies.

Political analysts warn Kennedy’s candidacy could disproportionately impact Biden’s reelection chances. A Quinnipiac poll this month showed Kennedy drawing 15% support nationally, with more coming from Democratic-leaning voters than Republicans. The Biden campaign has reportedly begun preparing opposition research.

Kennedy’s unconventional views have drawn both passionate supporters and fierce critics. His anti-vaccine activism during the COVID-19 pandemic made him a polarizing figure, while his environmental work with Riverkeeper earned bipartisan praise in earlier decades.

The campaign faces immediate logistical challenges, including ballot access deadlines in all 50 states. Kennedy will need to collect hundreds of thousands of signatures by summer to qualify nationwide. His team claims to have secured ballot lines in 12 states already.

This marks the most serious third-party presidential bid since Ross Perot in 1992. Unlike Perot, Kennedy brings both name recognition and a network of small-dollar donors from his earlier Democratic run. Federal records show he raised $10 million in the third quarter of 2023.

The Commission on Presidential Debates requires 15% support in national polls for participation. Kennedy’s current numbers suggest he could meet that threshold, potentially guaranteeing him a podium alongside Biden and Trump this fall.

Reactions split along partisan lines on Sunday. Trump posted on Truth Social that Kennedy “will be great for MAGA,” while Democratic strategist David Axelrod called the run “a vanity project that risks putting Trump back in the Oval Office.”

Kennedy plans a 50-state “Declaration of Independence” tour starting next week in Philadelphia. His opening rally will coincide with the anniversary of his uncle John F. Kennedy’s 1960 presidential nomination acceptance speech at the same location.
